  5. Congratulations on selecting a PUMA Shareware product.  At PUMA we
  6. are dedicated to producing quality software that is easy to use so
  7. that the student can concentrate on mastering the lessons.  You
  8. can master the program in less than 5 minutes and will not find 
  9. lots of switches or options to learn.
  10.  
  11. Vocabulary BLASTER is designed to increase your vocabulary skills
  12. quickly and easily.  It is fashioned around the question and
  13. answer format of FLASHCARDS and should be used in conjunction with
  14. a good dictionary.  The word definitions presented are treated as 
  15. memory joggers and not as the final definition.  This is because 
  16. many of the words may have several meanings and your dictionary 
  17. should be consulted for actual definitions and to understand the 
  18. full context of the meanings.

  20. The program is designed to run on any IBM compatible computer and
  21. the dictionary used can be hardbound or, for best results, a
  22. multimedia electronic version with audio which provides the
  23. correct pronunciation. I like to use Windows95 to switch quickly
  24. between a multimedia dictionary and FLASHCARDS.  The dictionary is
  25. my technical expert and FLASHCARDS handles the memorization.

  32. Getting started:
  33.  
  34. At startup you will be given two options.  The first is the level
  35. (1 - 5) and the second is whether you want "definition" or "word"
  36. input.  At first the "word" input will be a bit easier.  You may,
  37. however, alternate word and definition input until you master the
  38. cards in both modes.
  39.  
  40. The only other thing you need to know is how to get out of the
  41. program if you want to return to the operating system.  That's
  42. easy, press <CTRL e> followed by <Enter>.
  43.  
  44. So you start up and are presented with a question, and you haven't
  45. got a clue.  Take a wild guess or just press the enter key.  
  46. FLASHCARDS will beep and display the correct "Answer" above your
  47. input.  The cursor then travels to the upper right corner of the
  48. screen where it waits for you to <hit any key>.  Note the
  49. difference between your input and the correct answer and then bump
  50. a key for the next question.

  52. You will likely strike out 10 times or more before you complete
  53. the set successfully.  When you make a error, the question will
  54. repeat after a few times.

  56. In each lesson, the student is presented with 5 sets of 20 cards.
  57. Each set is called a level and the program randomly selects from
  58. the 20 cards, 50 times.  The object is to complete the 50 
  59. questions without incurring more that two errors (three "Strikes"
  60. and you're out).  If you get the third strike, the high score is
  61. updated and you start over.  Typically you would start with level
  62. one and repeat it until you have "Successfully" completed it 10 
  63. times.

  65. At level two, you will be presented with a second set of 20 cards.
  66. At level two you work your way through the 2nd set and then the
  67. first set (you already know these), until you have completed both
  68. sets "Successfully" 10 times.

  70. By the time you get to level 5 you will work your way from level 5
  71. to level 4 to level 3 to level 2 to level 1.  As you progress
  72. through the series, the questions seem easier.

  76. When you have mastered lesson 1 continue with lesson 2.  I like to
  77. go back and review all previous lessons after completing a lesson.
  78. The repetition and review will quickly make these words yours to
  79. command.

  84. lessons included with this shareware version contain 200
  85. vocabulary words.  If you find these lessons useful, you are
  86. encouraged to register.  REGISTERED USERS will receive the
  87. complete course of 4 lessons containing 400 vocabulary words.  
  88. They will also receive any future revisions of the program, 
  89. become eligible for custom programming and discounts on other 
  90. Puma Shareware programs.
